The summit which held on Thursday 23rd March 2017 atLandmark Event Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, drove the agenda for achieving food security and agricultural prosperity in Nigeria through active discussions that will provide practical solutions towards boosting productivity within the earliest possible time.
The summit focused on important parts of the entire value chain process such as production, storage, value addition among others. Up to 60% of the food produced in Nigeria is lost at post-harvest due to improper storage, absence of processing lines and basic infrastructure. Issues surrounding post-harvest losses and how it can be drastically reduced was discussed during the summit. Value addition, producing to meet international standard, access to fund and also insurance was discussed also.
Special attention was given to some commodities such as rice, Tomato, Maize, chicken production, Oil Palm because of their deficit and importance to Nigeria’s food security objective. The summit endeavour to provide answers on what is required to make agriculture a viable business in Nigeria, while critical issues on productivity and profitability was allso addressed.
The state of out-grower schemes will also be examined, discussing the challenges and proffering adequate solution to engender its effectiveness. The summit will also critically examine the policies and frameworks required to create an enabling environment for private sector to drive the agricultural sector in Nigeria.
