Arsenal Can Win The League Without Another Striker – Wenger
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is confident that Arsenal can still win the Premier League even without signing a new striker. The Gunners’ dearth in the striking department has been well documented and many (pundits and fans alike) have tipped them to add a striker to their ranks in the winter window and the rumour mill has already gone to work by linking plethora of strikers from
the nooks and cranies of Europe with a move to the Gunners.
The Gunners’ top priority in the summer was to sign a striker and failed in their efforts to sign both Luis Suarez and Gonzalo Higuain.
“I think we can win the title without signing a striker,” Wenger said.
“[Lukas] Podolski is not back but he shouldn’t be too far now. They make it less critical to sign a striker. Also, Theo [Walcott] gives us qualities that other players haven’t got. It’s a different option. Theo also gives us an opportunity to be a mobile striker. If we lose Giroud today we have nobody with body weight up front.
“Look, I am not against it [a January signing]. I don’t say I never make a mistake. I certainly made some. Sometimes it is because we didn’t sign the right player.”
Interesting thoughts from Wenger. While I agree with his thoughts that Walcott and Podolski could do a decent job for Arsenal in attack but it would be nice if we could get another striker in January. Trying to buy an important player in January could be a huge risk since most of the strikers are a;ready cup-tied in the Champions League while for those that are not (Pato and Suarez), one would need some time to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League while Liverpool are reluctant to sell Suarez to Arsenal. Does it make sense to spend big to get a striker that won’t be able to help in the Champions League? If Arsenal are planning to look up to Giroud, podolski and Walcott in the Champions League, then they can as well use them in the Premier League and FA Cup.
That said, nobody knows what Wenger will decide. The Frenchman is very unpredictable when it comes to his move in the transfer window. if he could buy Mesut Ozil in the summer, he could yet spring another surprise in the winter window
