Looking back at the year 2013 one can best describe it as a 12-month of more sorrow and little bliss for millions of Nigerians. Our Senior Correspondent, Daniel Abia, picked few events that took place in the country. Particular attention is given to sports, politics, death of prominent Nigerians and the menace of the terrorist group, Boko Haram, among others. He also touched on the death of the greatest African political leader, Nelson Mandela.

The Senate of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri at its 375th Extraordinary meeting held on Monday, December 2, 2013 considered the directive of the Federal Government on resumption of duty by Academic Staff in Federal Universities and decided that academic activities in the University should resume immediately for the conclusion of the 2012/2013 Rain Semester.

Consequently all students of the University are required to return to campus between Monday December 2, and Friday December 8, 2013 while Rain Semester Examinations commence on Monday December 9, 2013 and end on Saturday December 21, 2013.

Accordingly, all academic staff are required to proceed immediately to their respective Departments to sign in for resumption of duty not later than Wednesday December 4, 2013.

While Justin Timberlake and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis went into the 2013 MTV EMA on Sunday night (November 10) as the most-nominated with five nods apiece, there seemed to be plenty of hardware to go around as chart-toppers like Eminem, Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry took home honors. The action wasn't just at the podium, of course, as the aforementioned winners were also among those who took the stage for unforgettable performances.

Former House of Representatives member and Executive Secretary, Anti-Corruption Network, Dino Melaye was on the 23rd arrested  by police during a protest at the Federal Secretariat in Abuja. Dino led a group of protesters to the Federal Secretariat, Abuja around noon calling for the sack of the Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, over the purchase of two BMW armoured cars.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday set up a three-man administrative panel of inquiry to probe the embattled Minister of Aviation, Mrs. Stella Oduah, over the purchase of two bullet-proof BMW cars worth $1.6m (about N255m) by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority on her orders

A group of anti-corruption protesters was today in Abuja confronted by armed hoodlums escorted by the police to frustrate a public protest aimed at forcing the Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, to resign from office.

The Minister is facing a public uproar over her scandalous purchase of BMW armored cars from a cash-strapped agency in her ministry.

Dino Melaye, a former member of the House of Representatives, led the protest, but the protesters were attacked by the crowd who claimed they were there to ‘support’ the Minister.

The police arrested several protesters, including Mr. Melaye, saying he was leading an "illegal protest".  He was taken in a car to the office of the Commissioner of Police office where he was taken into custody.

The police also seized vehicles belonging to the anti-corruption protesters, claiming they were obstructing traffic.

A contingent of police officers also prevented the protesters from leaving the Federal Secretariat area where they had gathered for the protest to the Aviation ministry.

Unlike the protesters, the police did not harass the armed hoodlums

Four days after the DG of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Fola Akinkuotu, bragged before journalists that the two armored vehicles controversially purchased by his agency for the aviation minister were available for inspection at anytime by journalists, the agency and indeed the Aviation Ministry have refused to make it available for any inspection.
